Edwin S. Porter nació el 21 de abril de 1869 en Scozia, Italia.
Emigró a América en 1895 y trabajó con el Vitascope pasando por varios oficios antes de trabajar como proyeccionista.
Lanzó un nuevo proyector y alrededor de 1900, después que un incendio le dejara totalmente arruinado, comienza a realizar películas para Edison.
Experimenta numerosas novedades técnicas: Salvamento en un incendio (The Life of an American Fireman, 1903) es quizás la primera película americana de "guion" con una primera tentativa de desglose narrativo; Asalto y robo de un tren (The Great Train Robbery, junto al actor G. M. Anderson, llamado "Broncho Billy"), ancestro del western (y del filme policíaco) ofrece una estructura ya más compleja (panorámica primer plano, etc.) y abre la vía de la simultaneidad de las escenas de acción.
Abandona a Edison en 1909, y comienza a trabajar por su cuenta, funda la Rex Film (1911) y se une a la Famous Players.
Estaba llevando a cabo investigaciones en torno al color y el relieve cuando el crack de Wall Street le arruina.
Edwin Stanton Porter falleció en Nueva York el 30 de abril de 1941 en el olvido.
